Manoeuvre Orders and counter-charge

Units on manoeuvre orders may not approach within 4UD of the enemy. However, cavalry may counter-charge. In a 'normal' counter-charge supporting units may move up with the counter-charging unit. Does the restriction on units with manoeuvre orders prevent supporting units moving within 4UD in support of the counter charge?

Presumably a similar restriction would also apply to units on hold orders leaving the defended area to support an opportunity charge by cavalry.

Further, if a unit with manoeuvre orders is fired upon, can it return fire? Can other units of the same division support that fire?

The other point that was raised with this situation:- are other cavalry units in the maneuver group allowed to intercept counter-charge?

Hi all,

the only restriction for counter charging with a Maneuver Order is to be the target of the charge.
In maneuver you can only protect yourself , however the support units can help you.

With an Hold order, you can also do an opportunity charge out of the holding zone. An you can also have support.

Counter charge p 43.

So you are saying that its possible to move troops to support a unit that counter charges a charge on itself but not undertake a counter charge if it is not the target of the original charge.

That does not seem consistent to me. If cavalry can counter-charge, then surely all the counter-charge rules should apply, including cavalry counter-charging when nearby friends are the target.

Manoeuvre orders prevent the division initiating the combat, but by definition, counter-charge is responding to the enemy.

If i made the translation of the Maneuver order :

p32 : Cavalry units can counter charge if it is targeted.

Roger one point to make about your last comment don't forget that requirements to comply with orders over rule the general orders see page 30 order description.

OK, " cavalry counter charge if attacked" satisfies me that it has to be the target unit only which counter-charges
We are agreed then.
We are also agreed that if a unit is targeted my fire or shock, its supporting units join in as usual?
