So,
A unit of french hussars charges some russian cossacks, moves 4 ud towards them. The cossacks flee like good cossacks do.
However there are some detached skirmishers slightly to the right and in arc so the french lc charges them and moves another 3ud towards them. They also flee and get into a field. At this point the LC choose to halt the charge and pass the test. We had some doubt as to whether this was allowed given they had continued the charge from the first target but seemed reasonable. Halting at that point did make a difference because when the rallied back, they went over the crest of a hill which meant Russian artillery could not target them.

Couple of things , I presume you followed all the if's and buts about charging, i.e second charge target in range at start of the initial charge.
Does the skirmishers outdistance the LC in their initial flee of 2UD? in which case the cavalry are disordered and can make a withdrawal move. If not and they are skulking in rough going the cavalry can charge into rough going as its only difficult going they can't charge into, so if you can contact them they are routed even in rough going. However the cavalry can always try to halt the charge as in reality its only one charge its just the target changed and no benefit has accrued to the charging unit as the second target was in range at the start of the charge move ( although benefits from a kinked charge!)

Yes, in range at start of the move. Yes the sk were in range of the rough going. However the LC could make it to the Rough going but not into because they would exceed rough going move. Being able to halt before the withdrawal was important as it would enable them to get behind a hill otherwise they were going to take artillery fire.
