Battalion Guns and Skirmishing
Polish infantry may deploy one line unit in each division as skirmishers like light troops can. If the unit has a battalion gun, what happens?
Re: Battalion Guns and Skirmishing
That's a good question.
Imo, the unit lost it. But there is nothing in the rules.

+1
skirmishers are fast moving troops that rely on accurate fire and using terrains features as cover. That seems totally the opposite of using canons (can't move in difficult terrain, -1 UD movement, abandoned if fleeing)

Re: Battalion Guns and Skirmishing
True, however, when a unit disperses troops to skirmish we know that not all of the troops will go out as skirmishers. That is just the way the rules work. So, arguably the battalion guns may be inactive and waiting with the rest of the unit.

Re: Battalion Guns and Skirmishing
IIRC last time this came up (in reference to Grenzers) the consensus was that the guns remained with the HQ and other elements of the unit and re-appeared when the unit reformed, as currently skirmishing isn't a ground to lose them.

Re: Battalion Guns and Skirmishing
That would be a good idea for me.
Re: Battalion Guns and Skirmishing
THAT would be logical and simple! Agreed.
Re: Battalion Guns and Skirmishing
Why not, simple . Agreed too.

Re: Battalion Guns and Skirmishing
That is all well and good, but if the skirmisher flees, which they do at the drop of a hat, or crosses difficult terrain, or crosses an obstacle, would not the gun be lost for good according to p. 24? I see no exemption here for detached skirmishers. And if all these "special cases" for battalion guns and/or skirmishers exist, shouldn't they have been in the RAW?

Re: Battalion Guns and Skirmishing
The guns and their crews cannot skirmish. Hence they cannot be fleeing or whatever with the skirmishers. Our argument is that when a unit deployed as skirmishers not all of the unit would be involved. I am not an expert, but I am aware that in the case of the later Prussian army, as an example, only the third rank was actually sent forward to skirmish.
Clearly such a level of detail is not catered for in the rules. Splitting into groups of skirmishers is not a stated cause for removing the guns. We are suggesting that the guns would be 'left behind' and should rejoin the unit if it reforms.
