I was wondering about conventions for basing officers. In a critical situation it can matter, since there are bonuses in tests for officers being within a certain number of UD in a unit. The rules are clear on the number of figures on a commander base - 1 for a Divisional commander, 2 for a Corps commander, and 3 for an Army commander. The question is what size for the bases?
I am making the following assumptions for 15mm and 25mm figures. Napoleonic figures here in Adelaide are mostly based on 2 x 2 bases from the old Napoleon’s Battles rules. So these are:
15mm
Infantry 4 figures (2x2) on 20mm x 25mm base
Cavalry 2 figures (1x2) on 25mm x 25mm base
Artillery 1 gun on 37.5mm x 25mm base
Commanders
Division 1 figure on 25mm x 25mm base
Corps 2 figures on 40mm x 40mm base
Army 3 figures on 40mm x 40mm base
28mm
Infantry 4 figures (2x2) on 40mm x 40mm base
Cavalry 2 figures (1x2) on 50mm x 50mm base
Artillery 1 gun on 60mm x 60mm base
Commanders
Division 1 figure on 40mm x 40mm base
Corps 2 figures on 50mm x 50mm base
Army 3 figures on 60mm x 60mm base
Some systems have commanders on circular bases, which immediately makes them stand out more. The disadvantage is that for a given diameter, they will make less “reach” by not being able to measure distance to units from the corners. What are common conventions elsewhere?

Re: Basing for Commanders?
p 17. One UD square.
The way we play is regardless of how it is based, treat the measurements if in doubt as if you have a 1 UD base.
